PhD Retreat in Bonn

October 18, 2016

On 19 and 20 September/Recently the first DietBB retreat took place and aimed at getting the young researchers closer together. Creativity was the keyword during these two days.

The highly inspiring location, Basecamp in Bonn served this purpose very well. On the first day the Design Thinking workshop was organized. Design Thinking developed from a movement in the 80s and was further improved at Stanford University, USA. This technique is widely used in big companies to make new product, however science is also a field that could benefit. Design thinking provides different tools to solve problems which build up ideas through different steps in contrast to the more analytical way of thinking in research. Design thinking forces people to think outside the box. On the second day the progress of the TAs was discussed and how collaboration might be optimised. Highlight was the speeddating session in which the six TAs discussed potential cross-TA collaborations.

These two days were closed with a team-building event. Seperated in two groups and locked up in two rooms, the teams battled in the Kuckkucksnest against each other in Escape Room in Bonn.
