DietBB Seminar Series: Lifestyle and metaflammation, a memorable inflammatory connection

June 03, 2019

The chronic consumption of Western-type calorically rich diets combined with a sedentary lifestyle in Western societies evokes a state of chronic metabolic inflammation, termed metaflammation, and is ‘memorized’ by innate immune cells through long-lasting metabolic and epigenetic cellular reprogramming.

Anette Christ, Dr. rer. nat. Institute for Innate Immunity Biomedical Center, University Hospital Bonn, will talk about "Lifestyle and metaflammation, a memorable inflammatory connection"

Abstract:
The chronic consumption of Western-type calorically rich diets combined with a sedentary lifestyle in Western societies evokes a state of chronic metabolic inflammation, termed metaflammation, and is ‘memorized’ by innate immune cells through long-lasting metabolic and epigenetic cellular reprogramming. Overall, metaflammation contributes to the development of many prevalent non-communicable diseases (f.e. type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, neuro-cognitive diseases and certain cancers), and these lifestyle-associated pathologies represent a rising public health problem with global epidemic dimensions. A better understanding of how modern lifestyle and Western diet activate immune cells is essential for the development of efficient preventive as well as therapeutic strategies for common NCDs. In our Institute, we are assessing the systemic and cellular mechanisms that are activated/ involved in Western lifestyle induced metaflammation. Moreover, we are figuring out how this knowledge can be translated to protect the public from the health burden associated with their selected lifestyle.

Date & Time: Monday, June 3, 2019, 5.00-5.45 pm

Seminarroom U1.024, Endenicher Allee 19b, Bonn-Poppelsdorf

The talk will be followed by an informal Get-together.
